Old Parkhill, Newbourgh

Wellwood Leslie have developed proposals for the construction of a new 50 hectolitre craft brewery at Old Parkhill in Newburgh, Fife. The aspirations of the project were to create a sustainable and ethical local brewery re-establishing some of the local traditions and brewing heritage of the area. This project followed on from the successful creation of a new distillery immediately to the northwest of the site in the previously ruinous Lindores abbey.

The clients were looking to turn their hobby and passion for small scale brewing into a burgeoning business, whilst simultaneously breathing life back into a redundant farm steading that had stood on the site for over 150 years.

The main brewery accommodation included a Brewhouse (with cold liquor tank, mash tun, brew kettle, hot liquor tank, and hopback and gris feeder), Fermenting room (with 3no. 16Hl fermenting vessels), Conditioning Room (with 3no. 16Hl conditioning vessels), and significant storage areas for maturation, cask and keg wash/storage and storage of malt. Also included within the accommodation was future provision for single line bottling plant. Public aspects of the design included a function and presentation space with associated bar to allow for tours and event to be undertaken.

The clients were committed to building sustainably and sympathetically within the modest scale of the existing built fabric, whilst retaining the inherent materiality of the farmstead. Repairs to the existing stone facades allows the building to tie old and new together, retaining the tone and scale of the existing barn and byre minimise the visual impact of the proposed brewery. Removal of the existing metal profile roof and replacement with a grey roof tile is more sympathetic to the built fabric of the area, the building was originally tiled.

The brief included for biomass electricity generation on-site and additional elements of sustainability such as local malt procurement and water use.
