Mayfield Playing Fields & Nursery

Wellwood Leslie provided architectural services for the High School’s playing fields facility since 2007.

The Mayfield Sports Centre replaced a range of outdated gyms spread across the city centre campus with a single state of the art Physical Education facility in 2007.

It is at the heart of the Mayfield and Dalnacraig playing fields and is designed to integrate new and existing facilities into a coherent whole by providing a single point of access to all facilities on the site, both internal and external.  A new single reception provides access to changing rooms, a six-court multi-purpose games hall, gymnasium, fitness suite, dance studio, classrooms and staff base. Access is also provided to existing external sport changing rooms, and the hospitality lounge.

The external changing rooms support activity on Mayfield’s grass pitches. The school makes full use of the facilities during term time, and access is available to the general public school after school hours. During holiday periods the centre is used for a range of sport camps allowing children intensive periods of coaching in a range of indoor and outdoor sports.

Careful use of daylight in the activity spaces creates and attractive environment and reduces energy costs for lighting. The integration of all facilities within a single energy network has also reduced energy costs for heating and hot water generation.

3G all weather hockey pitches with floodlighting were constructed using a design and build contract at Dalnacraig in 2010. An associated pedestrian crossing across the busy Arbroath Road links the facilities on opposite sides of the road.  The noise impact assessment was carried by CSP Acoustics, a wholly owned Wellwood Leslie company.

The pre-school nursery offers a full range of education facilities for 3-5 year olds on a single secure site and makes full use of access to the extensive grounds and sports facilities for children’s play areas.  Large, glazed screens face out onto the playing fields to maximise levels of daylight and are well shaded by a sheltering canopy to allow outdoor play in all weathers.

Wellwood Leslie guided the School through a process of site identification, option appraisal, outline design, planning consent, detailed design, warrant and tender, and contract administration to completion, and was the single point of contact providing a full consultancy service using sub-consultants for cost control, mechanical, electrical and structural engineering services.

The Nursery was opened by renowned children’s author Mairi Hedderwick in 2014.
