Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre Cladding Replacement

The Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre is a medical research facility located at Ninewells Teaching Hospital in Dundee. The building suffered a catastrophic cladding failure in 2021, just 12 years after completion.

Wellwood Leslie worked with the University team to understand the causes of failure and to identify the most appropriate means by which the cladding could be replaced.

Operating in a post-Grenfell environment, with increased scrutiny of cladding replacement projects, required the design team to adapt to the increased sensitivy in relation to the PI insurance market and updated building standards put in place over recent years for tall buildings.

Wellwood Leslie worked closely with a team of fire engineers and cladding specialists to devise a system that provided reduced fire risk, increased levels of insulation and provided system performance guarantees for the longer term.

The project was undertaken over a 12-month period from March 2023.
