CAHID Mortuary, University of Dundee
The award-winning staff of the CAHID (Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification) are amongst the most experienced in the UK in the fields of human identification, forensic anthropology, cranio-facial reconstruction and the study of the human body. The development of new techniques to preserve the human body and to make it available for clinical research has led to the requirement for a new mortuary and laboratory facility to be developed.
Wellwood Leslie Architects completed an initial feasibility study to create a new building integrated with the existing departmental and college facilities in the Medical Sciences Institute on the University Campus. The first part of the project has been completed comprising the ground floor Thiel method mortuary. The mortuary is the first of its type in the UK. Its design has subsequently informed the design of similar facilities in the UK and further afield.
Future phases of the project are intended to be progressed at a later date to allow for department expansion when funds permit.
