Elie Golf Club

Wellwood Leslie have undertaken to design a new starters box for The Golf House Club Elie on the site of the existing starters hut.

The existing starters hut incorporated a salvaged submarine periscope which towered nearly 10m above the hut and is one of the more unusual spectacles in world golf. The periscope was salvaged from HMS Excalibur in 1966 and was to be refurnished and incorporated into the new starters box as, due to the topography of the course, the club starter is required to use the periscope to determine when the first green has been cleared and it is safe to invite the next set of golfers to tee off.

The dismantling and reinstatement of the periscope required careful planning and consultation both the Structural Engineer and the original manufacturer, Barr & Stroud. In addition to the requirement for the periscope to be retained the client brief required that the club shop be incorporated in to the starters box to allow single manning and a retail focal point for members and visitors alike.

The design and materials were developed to tie with that of the existing building using natural slate, render and traditionally proportioned glazing.
