James Hutton Institute

As part of their Tay Cities Deal funded project to establish the International Barley Hub at their site in Invergowrie, the James Hutton Institute have developed a Barley Field Station where research crops are stored and analysed and a Farm Hub where all research farm machinery is stored and maintained.

The Field Station comprises 1386m2 of accommodation including seed storage and conditioning areas, research crop storage, research laboratories and associated office and seminar space. The Farm Hub provides 2376m2 of accommodation including office accommodation, staff locker/changing space, messing facilities, farm workshop including welding bay and storage space for all research farm equipment.  

In addition, the farm facility provides yard space for all farm related activities and lay down space for crop storage boxes, farm waste, fuel storage, washdown bay and specialist farm chemical storage facility.

The project was designed during the COVID-19 pandemic and was constructed through a design and build contract in 2021/22.
