Wellwood Leslie Architects have recently secured planning approval for 12 new homes for Angus Housing Association at Guthrie Street, Friockheim, Angus. The new development will replace The Lunan Park Resource Centre formerly owned by Angus Council.

We did it! Dundee Kilt Walk 2024 completed /
The Wellwood Leslie Team completed the Dundee Kilt Walk 2024.
Spirits were high on the day, along with the temperature.
A few sore muscles and a couple of blisters were picked up along the way and it was all worth it.
The further we walked the tougher it got, but one thing that kept us going was knowing so many of you donated. Whether you are a family member, a close friend, or know us through work, we cannot thank you enough for all your generosity, it really gave us motivation to finish.
Community Fundraiser at Aberlour Children’s Charity has been in contact and has directly noted every penny of your donation that will make a huge difference to disadvantaged children in Scotland and they couldn’t be more grateful to you for choosing to support Aberlour. The monies raised will allow them to continue their vital services and give every child the best possible start in life.

Almost there! Walk for Aberlour /
This Sunday we will be participating the Dundee Kiltwalk 2024 on behalf of Aberlour, Scotland’s Children’s Charity!
While some of the Team have chosen the green landscapes of Stirling for pre-walk training and looked in at Aberlour’s offices at Forthside, some of us have been training independently, and some of us will be shocked on the day! Nevertheless, we are all meeting this weekend to walk in support of a great cause.
We want to thank you for your fundraising support, it is incredibly heartwarming to know you are all with us. All funds raised will go directly to Aberlour, Scotland’s Children’s Charity, with every penny counting.

Cushieri Surgical Skills, Dundee Medi-Park /
Wellwood Leslie have completed a feasibility study in conjunction with the University of Dundee School of Medicine to investigate the opportunity for a specialist surgical skills research and teaching facility to be constructed at Dundee Medi-Park.
Cladding Replacement in Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre, Ninewells /
The Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre is a medical research facility located at Ninewells Teaching Hospital in Dundee. The building suffered a catastrophic cladding failure in 2021, just 12 years after completion.
Wellwood Leslie worked with the University team to understand the causes of failure and to identify the most appropriate means by which the cladding could be replaced.
Former Royal Alexandra Infirmary- Residential Conversion & Housing Development /
Wellwood Leslie Architects has recently secured Planning Permission for the residential redevelopment of the former Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley. This prominent site, which sits between Calside to the west and Neilston Road to the east, is dominated by the original late 19th Century hospital building which is a Category `B` listed building.
The original Royal Alexandra Hospital was constructed between 1897 and 1900 to the designs of local architect Thomas Graham Abercrombie. It comprised four buildings – the main infirmary, a nurses’ home, a dispensary and a lodge. The main infirmary remained in use as a hospital until 1986 at which point the new Royal Alexandra Hospital was built on a different site to the west. Subsequently, the easternmost wing of the infirmary was converted to flats and renamed Alexandra Gate, the nurses’ home was converted to flats in 2005-6 and renamed the Peter Coats Building, whilst the former dispensary and lodge became a children’s nursery.
The remaining two wings of the infirmary building became a care home which eventually closed in 2008. The main building and its surrounding grounds have been vacant for the last 16 years during which it severely decayed.
The project would result in the creation of a high-quality residential development to the south of Paisley city centre. The proposal includes the redevelopment of the late 19th Century hospital building to form mainly two-bedroom flats. Within the site boundary two additional residential buildings are proposed. To the north, a flat-roof extension of later date will be demolished, and a new 4-storey flatted development constructed in its place. To the west, on Calside, a new four-storey residential development is proposed. The surrounding hospital grounds will be restored and re-landscaped to create an appropriate setting. Pedestrians and cyclists will be prioritised in the design, and the necessary shared access roads and parking carefully integrated.
The redevelopment of the original hospital building is designed to preserve its historic features and integrate them into the design. The new buildings being added to the site are designed to harmonise with the existing building through material selection and roof geometry that echo the colour tones of the existing building and its roof profile while utilising modern materials and construction.
This redevelopment promotes sustainability through the re-use of the existing building structures, the integration of low-energy/sustainable design measures in their refurbishment and the new flats incorporate a low-energy design strategy.

As part of an ongoing working relationship with the University of Dundee, Wellwood Leslie Architects led a multi-disciplinary team to design and deliver extensive refurbishment works to existing changing room facilities at the Universities Riverside Campus.

St Andrews West development /
Wellwood Leslie Architects have worked with The R&A to develop proposals for their new staff headquarters, to be located within the St Andrews West development.
The building is intended to be the administrative base of The R&A’s worldwide operations located at the Home of Golf in St Andrews, and will bring together the majority of its staff from five existing locations to a modern, sustainable, distinctive, and collaborative working environment.
The building has a distinctive external appearance reflective of the status of The R&A as a world governing body and as a landmark building in the context of the St Andrews West masterplan.
The R&A has made a commitment to sustainability as a key component of the vision for the new building. It will have a range of sustainable features including; high levels of insulation, naturally daylight, and highly efficient MEP services with smart building controls. The project is to be assessed under the BREEAM standards with an “Excellent” rating targeted.
Landscape Architects Oobe Ltd design proposals set the building in its own curated landscape. Proposals are specifically reflective of a links golf environment, to create a setting for the new building appropriate for The R&A.
Structural design has been carried out by Goodson Associates, with the building to be constructed using hybrid steel frame, concrete deck, and timber Glulam roof systems. Glulam roof structures will contribute to the interior environment whilst replacing higher carbon steel components.
MEP systems proposed by Troup Bywaters + Anders are designed to be efficient, adaptable, and sustainable, and are proposed to minimise energy consumption. The building services strategy is designed to assist The R&A in its ambition to minimise carbon emissions and reduce environmental impact of its operations.
The project is to be taken forward under the guidance of Project Managers and Quantity Surveyors, AtkinsRéalis. Technical design development is ongoing, and construction is anticipated to commence in 2024.
Wemyss Place, Edinburgh /
Wemyss Place is part of a Category `A` listed terrace in the New Town of Edinburgh. The building had been previously converted from a Georgian townhouse to an office at some time in the 1980`s but the interiors were looking tired and dated with many of the original features either lost or concealed under unsympathetic finishes.
